Madame Tussaud's- Severiano Ballesteros

Here's a vintage image of Spanish professional golf Severiano Ballesteros. He won fifty events on the European tour which is the most all time. Ballesteros golfed professionally from 1974 until his retirement in 2007. He also won the Master's twice; 1980 and 1983.

Madame Tussaud's- The Beatles

Perhaps the greatest Rock n' Roll group of all time, the Beatles are seen here in a vintage Madame Tussaud's tableau. This is a representation of the early beatles, and many museums have created figures of the group from their various stages with Sgt. Pepper being the most surreal.

George sits above the rest of the band.

John stands beside the piano listening.

Ringo holds his drum sticks while Paul plays the piano. Just being able to tell the figures apart (not so easy with other Beatles figures) shows how talented Madame Tussaud's is in creating realistic wax figures.

Madame Tussauds London- Michael Jackson

This vintage shot from Madame Tussaud's in London shows Michael Jackson in what looks like his "Thriller" phase. Unlike my previous posts, this shot shows an even younger Jackson figure. It is sporting the trademark white sequined glove, and has far less realistic expression in the face. Although this was a "performing" Jackson, they didn't quite get the figure right, and the newer versions are far more accurate.

What I do like about this shot is the way the light behind the glove makes it look like the figure's hand is glowing. Of course that's just the angle, right?

Madame Tussaud's- Nastassja Kinski

In the old Madame Tussaud's London Conservatory we find German born actress Nastassja Kinski standing near the stairs. A model and actress in her teens, Nastassja Kinski became famous for her stunning good looks and has performed in dozens of movies. Here she shares the stage with many other notable celebrities such as the Beatles and Agatha Christie.

A close up of the actress. They did a fairly decent job with the figure, and having it hold on to the post is a great touch that must have been difficult to accomplish.

Madame Tussaud's- Guy Fawkes

(1570-1606)

This picture from Madame Tussaud's in London shows Guy Fawkes attempting to blow up the English Parliament building in order to restore Roman Catholic rule in England. The barrels are full of gunpowder, which would have created a devastating explosion. However, Fawkes was apprehended before his plot was completed. Although the plan was not fully executed, Fawkes was, but not before he became a legend in England.

Madame Tussaud's- Execution of Mary Queen of Scots

(1542-1587)

Madame Tussaud's is not all about celebrities, as much as their recent flurry of celebrity unveilings shows otherwise. Here is a picture of an historic tableau featuring the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. Convicted of treason, she was sentenced to death by beheading in 1587. It took three swings of the ax to properly remove her head.

The scene is very representative of the historic sets in the museum. Like the Palace of Living Art, the figures look very artistic. Almost as if they were a three dimensional portrait. This may not be the most interesting set ever designed, but the artistry is incredible.

Madame Tussaud's- Agatha Christie

(1890-1976)

And then there were none. . . Agatha Christie is perhaps the most recognized mystery writer of all time. With over 80 novels to her credit, she has remained the gold standard of mystery writing. Here, she sits in the conservatory awaiting all onlookers. A very realistic figure, even her "old woman legs" seem accurate. Not many authors become household names, and far fewer can be recognized by sight, but Christie managed to achieve both honors.

Madame Tussaud's- And When Did You Last see Your Father?

And When Did You Last see Your Father? (1878)

Based on the painting by William Fredrick Yeames, this tableau recreates the famous problem picture "And When Did You Last see Your Father?" The poor boy must choose between honesty and saving his Royalist father whom the soldier wants to capture. The boy's family stands behind, crying at the possibility that he may reveal his father's location. The detail on this accurate reproduction makes this scene more than just an above average set.


Notice just how close the tableau is to the original painting. Problem paintings were very popular in the nineteenth Century because of the ambiguous and complicated nature of the stories portrayed.

Madame Tussaud's- Princes in the Tower

Here at Madame Tussaud's is King Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury being "protected" in the Tower of London by their uncle Richard Plantagenet. Nobody saw them alive again and Richard Plantagenet took control of the crown and became the infamous Richard III. These are some pretty cool figures, but their situation is so sad that they should belong in the Chamber of Horrors. That English history has some crazy stuff in it. Nice detail in the wax figures, great costumes and a well designed set makes this scene top notch. The scene appears to be based on the painting by Hippolyte Delaroche.
