This old postcard shows the exterior of the American Heritage Wax Museum in Scottsdale Arizona. The cars give away the era this photo was taken in. Like so many other wax museums, the American Heritage Wax Museum focused on the historically significant events that shaped American history. I believe the building is still around, but the museum is long gone. Although I don't have much information on when it closed.

Hi! Recently came across your site and am enjoying it quite a lot. I was born in Scottsdale in 1964, but I don't remember this museum. However, there was a Madame Tussaud's Royal London Wax Museum in the area. I believe it was probably in Tempe. I remember many field trips to the museum with it's Carousel of Stars (a real working carousel with wax figures of Hollywood movie stars riding the horses), Lincoln figure with moving eyes, Chamber of Horrors, and fantasy section at the end of the tour. It was one of my favorite places to visit as a kid, although I've had trouble finding any information on it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Michael. The Royal London Wax Museum was located in Phoenix on Van Buren just near the Tempe and Phoenix city limits. The "Carousel of Stars" was one of seven different "Worlds", which were themed sections of the museum. I agree, it is hard to find information on this specific museum because there have been at least four different Royal London Wax Museums. (Only one of which is still around)
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble finding info on this museum! I remember that one of the figures riding the carousel was Goldie Hawn. And I don't recall ever seeing another Goldie Hawn figure in any of the other museums I've visited. Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention!
ReplyDeleteMy parents took me to a Bible themed wax museum on one of our family vacations. It was most likely in the midwest somewhere. There was a display of Jesus walking on the water, but it was indoors as opposed to the outdoor display featured on your site. It also had a display of Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt. As a kid, I thought it was a cool effect, as you saw the "normal" figure first, then it turned around, and then it was a pillar of salt. Does any of this sound familiar?
Thanks for your work. As a fan of wax museums (and someone who thinks they're creepy), I appreciate it. I spent many wonderful afternoons exploring Movieland when I lived in SoCal.
Hmm. I can't quite figure out what museum you're referring to. It sounds like something that might be in the Bible walk museum, but I've never been. It could have been from a long gone museum as well.
ReplyDeleteMovieland was the place that got me interested in wax museums. My family would pass it on our way to Knott's and my parents had an old guidebook from the 70's that I was fascinated with. It wasn't until two or so years before it closed that I ever actually visited the museum, and I regretted never making down there earlier. Once I heard that it was closing, I took several more trips and took as many pictures as I could.
As for the Goldie Hawn figure, make sure you check out my newest post!
